Sri Lanka Coronavirus cases spike to 1182 on Kuwait returnees, one death

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Coronavirus cases spiked to 1182 by 1900 hours on May 25 from 1141 a day earlier the health ministry said, while one returnee from Kuwait died, taking the total deaths to 10.

By late afternoon on May 25, all cases confirmed were from quarantine centres in Trincomalee and Minneriya who had returned from Kuwait, the state information office said.

By May 25 patients treated for Coronavirus in hospitals had spiked to 477 from a little over 300 two weeks earlier.

The head of Sri Lanka’s health service Anil Jasinghe had said that the government would slow the pace of repatriation to help cope with the spike in cases.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry said it is finding accommodation for passengers who were on a cancelled flight from Kuwait.

Sri Lanka is relaxing curfews in Colombo and Gampaha from May 26 but buses from other areas will stop just outside of two districts.

Sri Lanka has been making strong progress in fighting Coronavirus actively contract tracing and quarantining domestic clusters that developed from returnees who arrived before May 19.

The last cluster relates to a Navy base which grew at a time when tests were not done on frontline workers. (Colombo/May26/2020)

1) They can't and shouldn't  say No!

2) Every country has a obligation to accept their Citizens ( in good or bad health).
If a Citizens want to returns to their home country , it their civic right!

3) Every other country in the world accept their citizens
( maybe North Korea won't but 99.9% of citizens can't get out of
that country anyway)

4) What is needed is method not to overwhelm our system
and a  mechanism to quarantine such people before they go out in public.

ps  If Kuwait is trying to do this intentionally, it is another matter to deal with.
But Sri Lankans are Sri Lankans so we have to accept them!

Total number of COVID 19 cases now 1,469 as May 27 breaks records with 150 patients detected

ECONOMYNEXT – The total number of patients detected yesterday May 27, has risen to 150 bringing the number in Sri Lanka since the outbreak to 1469, the Epidemiological unit of the Health Department reported.

Yesterday the government designated two recently built hospitals as treatment centres for COVID 19 patients as the numbers with the disease rocketed up.

This is the highest number detected in a day since the outbreak more than double that of the previous high.

Of the patients detected yesterday, 97 are returning migrant workers from Kuwait and 53 are Navy personnel.

Last night the number stood at 134 with 53 Navy and 81 from the returnees.

A spokesman for the Health Ministry Viraj Abeysinghe told EconomyNext that the increasing number of diagnosed patients from the returning migrant workers has compelled the government to find new hospitals to treat them.

The hospitals are at Hambantota and Teldeniya, he said. The Hambantota hospital is a relatively new institution built with Saudi Arabian assistance after the 2006 tsunami destroyed the older hospital.

At Teldeniya, the hospital is smaller but is also a new institution built after the new town areas of Digana were constructed.

“This is part of our plan to deal with the influx of patients from the returning migrant workers,” he said.

Although Sri Lanka has said that there is no community transmission of the disease as yet, the numbers of patients from the so-called Navy Cluster and the Middle-Eastern returnees has seen the totals rise from 271 on April 20 to 1,453 to today May 27.

The Navy cluster which erupted in the large Navy base in Welisara near Colombo after some sailors rounding up suspected COVID 19 patients has up to now produced 727 confirmed cases. The virus has ravaged the base Navy Barracks as well as among their family members when personnel were allowed to go home on leave.

The Navy began moving personnel who may have been exposed to the disease to quarantine centres away from Welisara to protect the personnel and their families still stationed in the base.

Migrant workers stranded in the Middle-East in particular began returning in large numbers last week. Many of them designated to be illegal in Kuwait due to visa overstay or without valid work permits were detained in camps and sent home by the Kuwaiti government in their own aircraft free of charge.

One of the Kuwaiti returnees died earlier this week after being admitted to the Dambulla hospital complaining of a chest pain. It was later found that she had contracted COVID 19. She too had been in mandatory quarantine after returning from Kuwait. (Colombo May 27, 2020)

Sweden has the highest coronavirus death rate in the world – and it’s getting even worse

Sweden now officially has the worst coronavirus death toll in the world, calling in to question its controversial decision not to impose lockdown as the pandemic swept through Europe.

In early March, the country opted for minimal restrictions, including the banning of public events of more than 50 people, barring visits to care homes, non-essential travel and anti-crowding rules in bars and restaurants.

The measures had a positive effect despite critics questioning Sweden’s non-authoritarian approach. But from early April, the numbers began to change, showing the country’s death toll was starting to climb.

Figures published by Our World in Data shows Sweden now has the highest death rate per capita in the world. In the seven days between May 12 and 19, Sweden reported, on average, 6.25 COVID-19 deaths per million per day.

The current COVID-19 death toll stands at 4,226 – almost 40 deaths per 100,000 people.

Yahoo News looks at three key factors in the Swedish government’s decision to not impose a full lockdown and how they may have contributed to the rise in fatalities.

‘Restrictions’ on restrictions

The legal framework within which the government of Sweden operates does not directly allow it to impose draconian measures, such as a widespread or nationwide shutdown.

This is because there is no provision in the Swedish constitution that allows the imposition of a state of emergency during peacetime crisis. There are, however, provisions to do so if there is a war.

But on 16 April, the Swedish parliament passed a bill that granted the government decision-making powers to tackle the pandemic. The bill took effect two days later.

The government may use the powers close schools, restaurants, gymnasiums and businesses – but does not give it power to impose a nationwide curfew.

While Sweden suggested many familiar rules that other nations were following – such as keeping distance from others, refraining from going to into the workplace and avoiding non essential journeys – the advice was issued by the country’s Public Health Agency, rather than by the government.

Coronavirus: How the pandemic in US compares with rest of world

Two days after the US recorded its first case of coronavirus, Donald Trump said the situation was "totally under control" and assured the public it was "going to be just fine".

Fast forward four months and the virus has spread across all 50 states, leaving a death toll of 100,000 from more than 1.6 million confirmed cases.

We've taken a look at how those figures compare to other countries around the world and how the situation could develop over the next few months.

The death toll in the US became the highest in the world in early April and has risen dramatically since then.

President Donald Trump initially said "50 to 60,000" people could die during the outbreak but in May he said he was hopeful the toll would be lower than 100,000. That benchmark has now been hit though and there are still about 1,000 deaths a day on average.

Rather than focus on deaths, Mr Trump has preferred to cite the mortality rate - that is the number of people that have died relative to the country's population - as evidence that the US has dealt with the virus more effectively than some other nations.

The chart below shows the countries with the highest death tolls and, to the right, their mortality rate. You can see that by that measure there are several countries where a greater proportion of the population has died during the coronavirus outbreak.

Belgium, with a population of 11.5 million, has seen 82 people in every 100,000 die during its coronavirus outbreak while the US, with a population of around 330 million, has seen nearly 30 people in every 100,000 die.

But if you look at New York - the worst-hit state in the US - the mortality rate there is close to 150 people in every 100,000, which shows that there is a lot of variation across the US.

One of the problems with comparing countries is that many of them report deaths in different ways. Belgium, for instance, includes deaths where coronavirus was suspected of being present but was never confirmed with a test. Some US states record deaths this way, but not all.

Coronavirus infections are rising as states reopen, potentially signaling a second wave

On Sunday, President Trump, ever the optimist, tweeted that coronavirus “Cases, numbers and deaths are going down all over the Country!”

Two days later, both Reuters and the New York Times reported that new daily cases of COVID-19 — which have been falling for weeks, both nationally and in the hardest-hit metropolitan areas — suddenly and simultaneously started to rise in more than a dozen states.

The Times counted 14 states where the rolling seven-day average of new infections has climbed over the last two weeks.

Narrowing the timeframe and focusing on the total weekly case count, Reuters found that 20 states reported an increase in new infections during the week ending May 24, up from 13 states the week before.

Most of the affected states were among the first to reopen in late April or early May: Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. In others — Arkansas, North Dakota, Oklahoma — statewide stay-at-home orders were never issued, but businesses that had been closed began reopening around the same time.

So while Trump touts the good news from 30,000 feet, is a second wave beginning to build just below the surface?

For months, epidemiologists have been warning of the risks of reopening too soon. In April, the Trump White House issued its “Guidelines for Opening Up America Again,” which listed “the data-driven conditions each region or state should satisfy before proceeding to a phased reopening.” One of these conditions was a “downward trajectory of documented cases within a 14-day period.” Few if any of the early-to-open states met this benchmark. Then they reopened anyway. The fear among experts was that these states would soon see a rise in coronavirus infections as a result.

To get a sharper sense of where things stand — and where they may be heading — it’s helpful to zoom in on a single state. According to Reuters, South Carolina had the biggest week-over-week increase in new COVID-19 cases: 42.4 percent. The next closest state, Alabama, lagged far behind at 28.2 percent.

We are seeing increase in deaths once more, USA increased to 2,528, UL increased to 693, Brazil increased to 667, UK increased to 649, Italy increased to 369, Spain increased to 244 deaths.

USA continue to dominate the rate of new infections with 25,459 new cases identified yesterday. Brazil is at second place with 11,896 and Russia becoming third with 10,559 new cases.

Some analysts and political leaders predicting the control of this situation by June this year but it seems the peak situation will continue for the rest of the two months as well before showing any sign of gradual decline.

At the current rate total number of cases worldwide are likely to hit 5.7mn and total number of deaths are likely to hit 400,000 by the end of this month so can anyone realistically believe that bad days will be over by June? I think only a day dreamer can imagine such a bright situation.

This was a simple estimate did in the beginning of this month. Estimated 5.7mn total cases worldwide but as of today we have already 6mn on the cards due to higher than expected growth rates and the growth rates are growing exponentially day by day. All of us should keep in mind that this pandemic gonna to last a long time more than we and the world leaders such as Trump are expecting hence the looming worldwide recession including in Sri Lanka are going to be much much severe. Finally all these will flow back to worldwide equity markets...
