Sri Lanka’s Coronavirus deaths topped 200 on December 31 with persons being confirmed to have died from the disease.
A 72-year old male from Darga Town had died on 28.12.2020 while being treated at the General Hospital Kaluthara. He had sepsis, acute diabetes and Covid pneumonia
A 59-year old male from Homagama had died on 31.12.2020. He was diagnose with Covid 19 at the Base Hospitla Ambanpola and transferred to IDH in Colombo. He had developed an acute lung infection with Covid-19.
A 61 year old female from Colombo 05 had died on 31.12.2020. She was diagnosed at KDU Hospital and transferred to IDH. She had a liver infection and Covid pneumonia.
A 46-year old male from Galeweal had dined on admission to District Hospital in Galewela on 30.12.2020. He had complications from diabetes with Covid-19.
A 75-year old male from Pelmadulla had died on 30.12.2020 while being treated at Teaching Hospital Ratnapura. He had sepsis and lung infection.
Sri Lanka’s total confirmed cases had reached 35,329 and 7,766 were under medical care. Overnight 597 new cases were confirmed. (Colombo/Jan01/2021)

Slight downward trend in Sri Lanka’s daily COVID-19 cases inconclusive; more testing needed
ECONOMYNEXT – Daily COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka since the emergence of the second wave are showing a slight downward trend from end December 2020, official data shows, though it is too early to say anything conclusive. The number of daily PCR tests has also seen a drop over the Christmas and New Year holidays, according to one official, which may explain the shape of the curve.
In early December, Sri Lanka recorded an average of around 700 cases a day, but over the latter part of the month the numbers dropped to an average of about 500. In the first five days of January, the daily numbers show a continuous drop from 597 to 468.
Director of Health Services Dr Hemantha Herath told EconomyNext that there was a drop in samples collected for PCR testing over the festive period as healthcare workers were given a respite from their gruelling work schedules.
“They’ve all been working without taking any leave the past few months, so we gave some of them a break during the festive season. So the number of PCR tests was reduced,” Herath said.
It must also be noted that monthly cases are still on the rise.
“Though there is a reduction in daily numbers, we cannot say with certainty that there is a downward trend. There is a visible downward trend, but without carrying out more tests in the next few days we cannot confirm that there is an actual reduction in the number of cases,” he added.
Health authorities identified 468 new cases over a period of 24 hours that ended at 6am today (05), bringing total cases in Sri Lanka since the advent of the pandemic in March 2020 to 45,242. At present there are 7,210 active cases, with 583 individuals under investigation in state hospitals and temporary treatment facilities.
With two more deaths reported today, the country’s COVID-19 death toll has increased to 215.
Sri Lanka has conducted 1,299,336 PCR tests so far, with 12,826 PCR tests carried out in the 24-hour period that ended at 6am today.
Meanwhile, repatriation of Sri Lankans abroad is ongoing, amid criticism of neglect, particularly in the face of a controversial attempt to revive tourism. By this morning, 877 Sri Lankans returned to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi, Qatar and China, the national COVID-19 task force said, adding that all returnees will be directed to military-run quarantine centres.
Over the past 24 hours, 565 people returned home upon recovery, bringing the total recovered patients to 37,817. (Colombo/Jan 05/2021)

Covid 19 enters Parliament but the work will go on
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Parliament will function as normal although at least two Parliamentarians and a senior official of the Prime Minister’s office have tested positive for Covid 19, an announcement made by the Sergeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando said.
The two Parliamentarians who are Covid positive are the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Dayasiri Jayasekara and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem. Both MPs announced their conditions themselves.
The senior official is Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Coordinating Secretary for political affairs Kumarasiri Hettige, Fernando’s announcement said.
Hakeem, who is 60, had attended Parliament on January 5, and had come into contact with 15 other MPs and several Parliament staff, Fernando said. These contacts had been traced by viewing CCTV footage, he added.
Jayasekara, 51, the State Minister for Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel products had had a fever and undergone a PCR test which came back positive on January 8.
He is currently under treatment at a Hotel-turned Quarantine Centre in Hikkaduwa, media reported.
Jayasekara had attended a traditional ceremony at the SLFP Headquarters on January 1 which had drawn a number of other Parliamentarians including Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Hettige had come to Parliament on January 8 and had attended a meeting in the office of the Leader of the House, Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Fernando said.
Several officials in the office of the Leader of the House have been identified as close contacts of Hettige and will be duly tested for the virus. The locations that he had visited in Parliament have been identified and disinfected the announcement added.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene had told reporters last night that it was unavoidable for MPs to contract the virus “as they have to travel to areas where there are infected people.” (Colombo, January 11, 2021)
