Sugar Tax has hit carbonated beverages including Elephant house soft-drinks.

As per CCS reports, volume drop is as high as 21% during 3rd Q on YoY basis.

Sugar tax was imposed on carbonated beverages since Nov 2017. It increased the prices, and the label contained a mark showing the level of sugar.

Surprisingly sugar tax was only imposed on carbonated drinks, where even Milo or Nescafe also include a massive sugar content.

Staying focused,,,staying ahead... 2017/18

CCS has increased its revenue, despite many obstacles for FMCG sector.
However the bottom line was affected by these adverse conditions like imposing tax on sugar content as well as slowing of GDP growth.

2011 was a bubble in CSE , yet very few companies share price surpassed this bubbled up price.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The PE ratios clearly shows the speculative nature of market price in 2011 , and yet like many companies in FMCG sector the PE ratio is still at a higher value.

Top twenty list shows that foreign funds are interested in this company and in 2018 alone, BBH Emerging Asia Fund has collected few millions of shares.

Soft drink sector has witnessed 16% decline in volumes due to excise duty imposed on sugar content of carbonated soft drinks in Nov 2017.

Even Frozen Confectionery sector records a drop of 3.6 in volumes.

Company is looking into add Zero Sugar products to match the regulatory requirements.

Most manufacturers are deceiving their customers by playing with this factor.
They only talk about the Added Sugar % than the total composition %.

Sri Lanka is very slow in adopting such regulations such as sugar content declaration. Market will stabilize once the companies resort to low or no sugar products.

Protests as Sri Lanka cuts tax on sugary drinks

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This proposal if implemented as said will turn CCS financials and growth upside down. When this was introduced last year CCS profits plummeted dramatically. Now CCS is trading around 730/- and if this is confirmed ( will not cut back in case RW is back or someone else) there is a strong chance for CCS to move back towards 1,000/-.

Sri Lanka’s Elephant House 'sugar free' line scrapped
Jun 11, 2019

Sri Lanka's Ceylon Cold Stores, which operates the Elephant House food and beverage brand, scrapped its 'Go Sugar Free' soft drink line due to low consumer demand, the firm has said.

"The traction on the CSD (Carbonated Soft Drinks) “Go Sugar Free” variant introduced in 2018 was disappointing and as a result of the lack of consumer demand for sugar free CSD beverages in the Sri Lankan market, the Company withdrew the range," Ceylon Cold Stores shareholders in the annual report.

The 'Go Sugar Free' line was launched in April 2018, after Sri Lanka's elected ruling class, egged on by social engineering etatists tried to force unarmed citizens to dance to their tune by slapping a punitive tax on soft-drinks sweetened with natural sugar in 2017.

Sri Lanka also has high taxes on alcohol and beer.

Ceylon Cold Stores introduced sugar free versions of the existing beverages such as EGB, Necto, Cream Soda and Orange Crush.

The sugar free products contained Stevia, a plant-based sweetener.

The firm said the beverage sector volumes fell 16 percent due to an overall demand fall in discretionary food items, which was made worse with the sugar tax.

However, in 2019, the government revised the etatistic sugar tax to 40 cents per gram of sugar from the original 50 cents per gram, helping the beverage sector pick up.

"The industry welcomed rationalization of the sugar tax in the Government budget proposals for 2019 enabling the business to reduce prices of carbonated beverages towards the end of the financial year, which resulted in an uptick in volumes," the firm said.
