Brent crude added 0.7 percent to $41.48 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate rose 1.2 percent to $39.90 a barrel in New York. Oil markets have recouped their losses this year after slumping to a 12-year low last month on speculation stronger demand and falling U.S. output will ease a surplus.
Gold fell for a third day as the dollar stabilized. Bullion for delivery in three months declined 0.8 percent to $1,244.60 an ounce. Copper futures rose 0.5 percent to $2.2945 a pound.

Oil market rattled by deadly Brussels blasts
A suicide bomber blew himself up at Brussels airport on Tuesday killing at least 11 people and a further blast tore through a rush-hour metro train in the Belgian capital shortly afterwards, claiming 10 lives, public broadcaster VRT said.
Oil had risen earlier in the session following a drop in U.S. inventory levels that helped ease some of the concern around oversupply that could dampen future price recoveries.
Brent crude futures LCOc1 were up 5 cents at $41.59 a barrel by 1127 GMT, having risen to a session high of $41.75. Brent has gained over 50 percent from January's 12-year lows.
U.S. May crude futures CLc1 were down 6 cents at $41.46.

Scramble for oil storage extends, suggesting excess has room to run
Traders such as Vitol, Gunvor and Glencore are looking to extend or lock in new leases on storage tanks for crude oil and refined products in key hubs as far out as the end of 2018, sources at storage firms and trading houses say.
Storing oil in a heavily oversupplied market has been a cash cow for traders and oil companies in recent years as markets bet that future oil prices will be significantly higher than current ones, in what is known as contango.
Ian Taylor, chief executive of top oil trader Vitol, said on Tuesday that "stocks of crude and products continue to build and these will weigh upon the market".

The Death of Oil Demand
In the third quarter, broad-based manufacturing softness and financial market turmoil threatened to derail growth in developed markets, bringing some focus back to the demand side of the ledger. Annual oil demand growth proceeded to drop off in the fourth quarter from above 2 percent to 1.2 percent with acute cracks in China and advanced economies, seemingly confirming analysts' worst fears.
But Credit Suisse Group AG Global Energy Economist Jan Stuart concludes that oil demand "growth appears to be re-accelerating" in 2016, with the recent bout of softness attributable to a warm winter, subdued activity in resource-extracting industries, and persistent weakness in select sputtering emerging markets like Russia and Brazil.
"Oil demand growth is alive and well," he writes in a recent note. "We think that with hindsight this winter will look like a dip in an otherwise still unfolding fairly strong growth trend that is partly fueled by the ongoing economic recovery of in North America and Europe and longer standing trends across key emerging market economies."

Oil slips to one-month low on unexpected U.S. demand drop
U.S. gasoline demand, one of the strongest pillars supporting oil consumption, fell in January for the first time in 14 months, U.S. Energy Information Administration data showed.
The world's largest oil producers are due to meet in Doha on April 17 to negotiate an output freeze, but a jump in Russian oil production to a 30-year high in March has cast doubt over the chances of an output cap being agreed.
Brent crude, the global oil price benchmark, was down 26 cents at $37.43 (26 pounds) a barrel at 1000 GMT, its lowest since March 4.
U.S. futures fell by 21 cents to $35.49, also a one-month low.

Oil futures jump on output freeze hopes; glut hurts physical prices
Oil futures recovered from one-month lows to end the previous session up after the Kuwaiti governor for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Nawal Al-Fuzaia, said there were "positive indications an agreement will be reached" on output during a producer meeting scheduled for April 17 in Qatar.
U.S. crude futures CLc1 jumped over a dollar, or almost 3 percent, to a high of $36.92 per barrel before easing to $36.76 per barrel at 0646 GMT. International Brent futures LCOc1 rose as high as $38.64 before easing to $38.41 a barrel, still up 54 cents from their last settlement.

NYU Graduates Seeking $11 Billion of Gold
Now, New York University graduates Bastiat Viljoen, 31, and his brother Dane, who was an intern at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., want to revive the ailing mine, which they say may contain 9 million ounces of gold, worth almost $11 billion at current prices. They are partly financed by South African mining entrepreneur Peter Skeat.
With their backgrounds, the Viljoens and their partners would look more at home in Silicon Valley than South Africa’s rust belt of aging gold mines, some of the deepest and most dangerous in the world. The challenge at Blyvooruitzicht, which means happy prospect in Afrikaans, is formidable: to rebuild a mine and win over a restive local community, who described the area as a war zone when it was overrun by thieves and illegal miners after falling into liquidation in 2013, Johannesburg’s Sunday Times newspaper reported in 2014.

Is the oil price-GDP link broken?
Oil supply continued to increase in 2015, as US shale oil production was more resilient than previously thought, and countries like Iran returned to the market. In addition, OPEC, a cartel of oil exporters, is not restricting supply.
As a result, at the end of 2015, oil production had increased by about 3 percent compared to the 2014 average: from 86 to 88.5 million barrels per day. The International Energy Agency foresees that the world will be “awash in oil” in the near future[1]. This increasing supply put downward pressure on oil prices.
