For the first time in Sri Lanka’s aviation history, Emirates will launch its double-deck Airbus A380 aircraft on flights to Colombo commencing August 14.

An official from Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation said this service would be a once-a-week flight and it would operate with a stopover in a destination in the Far East. The Airbus A380 flies to Sri Lanka subsequent to the airport runway expansion concluded last April.

The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner manufactured by European manufacturer Airbus.

It is the world’s largest passenger airliner and the airports at which it operates have upgraded facilities to accommodate it.

Flying, the Safest Mode of Transport - Page 9 Empty Etihad Has $1.87 Billion Loss

Thu Jul 27, 2017 8:06 pm

Etihad Airways recorded a $1.87 billion annual loss, revealing the full extent of the pressures facing Persian Gulf carriers as they grapple with the impact of terrorism on global traffic flows and a low oil price that’s crimped local travel.

The 2016 loss came after Abu Dhabi-based Etihad booked a $1.06 billion charge from writing down the value of aircraft and a further $808 million hit from the reduced value of stakes in so called equity partners including struggling Air Berlin Plc and Italy’s Alitalia SpA, which filed for bankruptcy in May.

Qatar Airways plane forced to land after wife discovers husband's affair midflight

A Qatar Airways plane has been forced to land midflight after a woman who used her sleeping husband’s thumb to unlock his smartphone discovered he was having an affair.

The couple and their child were flying to Bali, Indonesia, for a holiday after boarding in Doha. The woman repeatedly hit her husband after learning of his infidelity and the captain was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Chennai, India, when the cabin crew was unable to restore order.

The family was then taken to a detention centre at the airport as they did not have an Indian visa before being put on a flight to Kuala Lumpur.

“The Qatar Airways flight QR-962 (Doha-Bali) was diverted to Chennai after the pilot requested it citing unruly passenger on board as the reason,” an officer from India’s central industrial security force (CISF) told the Hindustan Times, which first reported the incident.

“The woman and her husband, along with their child, were offloaded and the flight departed for Bali.”

The newspaper said the plane’s crew failed to calm the wife, who it said was an Iranian national. “The woman had unlocked her husband’s phone using his thumb impression when he was sleeping and then blew her top after discovering his infidelity,” it reported.

The Times of India said the Iranian woman made “such a ruckus” that the plane had no other choice but to make an unscheduled landing.

The family spent the day at Chennai airport and left for Malaysia on a Batik Air flight at 10.30pm.

The crew should have used the plastic manacles available on board to restrain her and isolate her somewhere in the crew rest area than making an emergency landing.
Diversions are very costly.
(I am sure QATAR will ban them from boarding their aircraft ever again).

Flying, the Safest Mode of Transport - Page 9 Empty China Airlines takes delivery of A350 XWB powered with biofuel mix

Sun Dec 03, 2017 9:08 am
China Airlines of Taiwan has become the second airline to join a programme to use a blend of traditional and sustainable biofuels to power aircraft for delivery flights from Airbus. The aircraft involved is the tenth A350-900 for China Airlines, which left the manufacturer’s delivery centre in Toulouse today for its new home in Taipei with a 10 percent blend of sustainable jet fuel in its tanks.

The sustainable fuel option for delivery flights has been developed by Airbus in association with Air Total, the aviation subsidiary of the global energy operator. In order to stock the eco-friendly product, Air Total has installed the first-ever biofuel station adjacent to the Airbus delivery centre in Toulouse. A total of 21 aircraft have so far been delivered by Airbus since the facility was inaugurated in May 2016.

In addition to Toulouse, Airbus is now working towards introducing the option for the use of biofuels for delivery flights from its facilities in Hamburg, Germany and Mobile, US. First deliveries from these sites are set to begin in 2018. The option will also subsequently become available from the company’s facility in Tianjin, China.

Given below is a complaint made by me to the Aviation authority SL recently;-

"Mr. H. M. C. Nimalasiri,
Director General,
Airport & Aviation Authority,
Sri Lanka.
23rd March, 2018

Dear Sir

Shoddy Ground Handling by Sri Lankan Air- UL 149 on 12th March 2018 & UL 150 19th March 2018 and Inconvenience Caused to Pilgrims

Recently, I had a very nasty experience with our national carrier Sri Lankan Air but still do not know what really led the national carrier to such low level. I am making this complaint to you, to investigate this unfortunate incident and take appropriate action within your authority.

On 12th March 2018, 39 passengers in our group including me were at the airport to get the Varanasi flight-UL 149. This trip was organized by BOC Travels.

First, we were told the flight is late by one hour, the usual security clearance (scanning hand luggage, phone, belt, shoes) completed and we were waiting at Gate No: 1 to board the flight.

Then, suddenly we were told that we should to go to Gate No: 10 upstairs situated at quiet a distance. The security guys there started the usual security procedure again- scanning hand luggage, phone, belt and shoes and we did not make any fuss because we were Buddhist pilgrims and then we were waiting there to get the flight.

To our amazement, we were asked to go to Gate No: 1 downstairs again. We obliged but requested not subject us to any security check as it was done twice but the security guys told us that they have no power to waive it off. After the hectic procedure was completed we were waiting to board the flight there.

Then they announced that we should go to Gate No:10 again, to board the flight. Thereafter, the same hectic procedure was followed without any apology.

More than half the group was over 60 years of age; there were about four persons who used wheel chairs. They were panting after the long walks up & down, standing in long queues, lifting bags and the hectic security procedures. Rest of the crowd too was dead tired and angry. I asked an Air Lanka officer what led to this pathetic situation but he vanished without any convincing answer.

After the same hectic procedure was completed, we were able to board the flight very late, tired and angry.

On 19th instant too, on our way back, we were led to Gate No: 1 at Varanasi Airport after the security clearance. Their security procedure was not that strict. When we were waiting to board the flight at Gate No:1, we were told to proceed to Gate No: 3 upstairs. The distance was a fairly long & hectic one for the elderly people who were already tired after the eight day pilgrimage. We were lucky that we were not subjected to the same security procedure there too, like in Sri Lanka. That day too we boarded the flight late.

Sri Lankan Air, tested our patience very badly and destroyed our very motive of the pilgrimage as if we were beggars traveling free of charge. They completely forgot that we paid for the ticket with our life long savings. No plausible reason was given for the mishap.

On our way back, our group leader was told by an anonymous officer on board, that usually such things happen when a Minister travels in the same flight. If this information is true, Air Lanka Chairman should resign for the very reason of mismanaging the air line under political influence. But the thing I still do not understand is the reason for sending us from pillar to post three times! One time would have been more than enough if that was the real reason to deviate.

Authorities including the regulator should investigate this cancerous development as this could be a regular occurrence. The officers who succumbed to political influence and the Politician who involved in it should be exposed and action should be taken by appropriate authorities without delay. If not, the authorities too will fall into the same shoddy category as the corrupt Sri Lankan Air guys.

The damage done to the National Carrier and the country at large by this unfortunate incidence internationally was aggravated by the very reason of the presence of two Americans in our group. One was a reputed journalist at HBO. This is the first time in history that foreigners joined this pilgrimage to Varanasi. They were interested in Buddhism but Sri Lankan Air destroyed this budding development with their shoddy ground handling.

In addition, there were many retired very senior government servants, a professor, university lecturers, doctors and professionals in our group. Sri Lankan Air is lucky that no one used any influence over the incident then & there.

I am copying this letter to the tour operator, BOC Travels, to provide necessary evidence & assistance in any inquiry to be held in this regard.

Thank You"

The officer in-charge of investigations wanted me to produce scanned copies of my Passport & Air ticket which I did promptly and awaiting their response.

Every Ass in this country is now taking the credit for ending the 30-year long war but when they travel around, they inconvenienced people more than when the war was really ragging.
Who was really on the flight ET?
(Once my wife and I travelled to Narita when the former president JRJ was on the same aircraft and we were even allowed into the First Class cabin to greet him, once the aircraft was airborne).

Kith, actually I do not know who was really in the flight, but now I remember that most Asian heads of states (including my3 and his crowd) were in Waranasi attending a Solar Power conference. Some members in his delegation who could not go on the first day may have been traveling with us.
