LSL Weekly Market Review

Colombo equity market started its weekly operations on Monday with negative returns as main bourse declined by 3.10 index points or 0.05% to close at 6,299.35 while 20-scrip S&P SL index declined by 3.93 index points or 0.11% to end at 3,474.93. Daily market turnover reached to LKR 867mn with the support of off-the-floor deals in Dunamis Capital, Commercial Bank and Distilleries. Accordingly Commercial Bank topped the turnover with LKR 187mn followed by John Keells Holdings (LKR 186mn) and Dunamis Capital (LKR 104mn). Moreover, PC Pharma, Ceylon Leather Products warrant 0014 and John Keells Holdings attracted heavy investor participation.

Foreign investors were net sellers with LKR 180mn worth of equities. Foreign participation was 41%.

Colombo Shares witnessed a positive trading momentum on Tuesday where both indices recorded gains. Main bourse gained 11.52 index points or 0.18% to end at 6,310.87 while S&P SL20 index gained 21.19 index points or 0.61% to end at 3,496.12. Daily market turnover was LKR 875mn.

Several crossings were recorded in Acme Printing and Packaging, John Keells Holdings, Hemas Holdings, Distilleries and Hatton National Bank. Accordingly John Keells Holdings emerged as the top contributor for the turnover with LKR 313mn followed by Distilleries (LKR 73mn) and Hatton National Bank (LKR 38mn). Further new shares of Bimputh Finance were listed on CSE subsequent to the right issue.  Moreover, penny stocks such as PCH Holdings, PC Pharma and Adam Investments attracted heavy investor preference during the session. Foreign investors were net buyers with net inflow of LKR 331mn. Foreign participation was 29%.

On Wednesday Colombo bourse sustained the positive momentum gained in previous session and closed with higher returns. Benchmark All Share Price index gained 10.68 points or 0.17% to end at 6,321.55 while S&P SL 20 index marginally gained 5.43 points or 0.16% to end at 3,501.55.

Daily market turnover was LKR 705mn. John Keells Holdings (LKR 245mn) emerged as the top contributor to the market turnover followed by ACME Printing (LKR 33mn) and Chevron Lubricants (LKR 28mn). Meanwhile penny stocks such as Central Investment & Finance, Ceylon Leather Products W0014 and Adams Investments managed to attract heavy investor interest during the session.  Foreign investors were net buyers with net inflow of LKR 138mn. Foreign participation was 39%. At the weekly primary T-bill auction held, yield on 3 month and 6 month treasury bills dropped by 2bps to 6.51% and 6.69% respectively while 12 month Treasury bill yield dropped by 1bp to 6.99%.

Colombo Shares closed with higher returns on Thursday, as All share price index gained 6.61 points (+0.10%) to close at 6,328.16 while 20-script S&P SL index gained 5.99 points (+0.17%) to close at 3,507.54. Daily market turnover was LKR 485mn. Hemas Holdings (LKR 55mn) emerged as the top contributor to the market turnover followed by Commercial Bank (LKR 53mn) and Lanka IOC (LKR 40mn). Ceylon Leather Products Warrant0014 and Central Investment & Finance managed to further attract heavy investor interest while PC House and PC Pharma were also among the heavily traded stocks. Foreign investors were net buyers with net inflow of LKR 47mn. Foreign participation was 22%.

Colombo equity market wrapped weekly operations on positive note where both indices witnessed favorable returns. Main bourse gained 35.33 index points or 0.56% to close at 6,363.49 while 20-scrip S&P SL index gained 13.31 index points or 0.38% to end at 3,520.85. Price appreciations in counters such as Ceylon Tobacco (closed at 1,049.80, +5.1%), Sri Lanka Telecom (closed at LKR 48.00, +2.8%), Commercial Bank (closed at LKR 139.70, +1.8%) and Access Engineering (closed at LKR 25.30, 5.4%) contributed favorably to the index performance.

Daily market turnover reached LKR 1.1bn with the support of several crossings recorded in Amana Bank (21.4mn shares at LKR 7.60), Access Engineering (5.0mn shares at LKR 25.00), Hatton National Bank (0.3mn shares at LKR 156.00), and John Keells Holdings (0.1mn shares at LKR 221.00).

Accordingly John Keells Holdings emerged as the top contributor for the turnover with LKR 383mn followed by Access Engineering (LKR 186mn) and Amana Bank (LKR 172mn).
Moreover, John Keells Holdings, PC Pharma and Access Engineering attract heavy investor participation during the trading session.

Gainers offset losers 107 to 87, while 71 counters remained unchanged. Cash map declined to 49% from 58%. 17 equities managed to reach 52wk high prices while 4 equities touched 52wk low price levels.

Foreign investors were net buyers with net inflow of LKR 48mn worth of equities. Foreign participation was 16%. Foreign inflows were seen in counters such as Hatton National Bank (LKR 46mn), Commercial Bank (LKR 31mn), Ceylon Tobacco (LKR 9mn) while outflow was mainly seen in John Keells Holdings (LKR 31mn).
