Hydropower generation increases in Sri Lanka with torrential rains
Sun, Nov 2, 2014, 09:18 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Nov 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka's state-owned power supplier, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) says the hydropower generation has been increased significantly due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of the reservoirs.
The hydropower generation has reached over 72% of the daily consumption yesterday.
The major hydropower reservoirs are near spilling. Castlereagh is 93% full, Maussakele 90% full, Kothmale 89% full and Victoria 91% full, CEB sources say.
However, Randenigala and Samanalaweva reservoirs are only at 40.5% and 32.5% respectively.
The Meteorology Department meanwhile has predicted more rain for most parts of the island.
With the increase in hydropower generation, the CEB says it has minimized purchasing power from more expensive liquid petroleum thermal generators. However, CEB says it still incurs losses since it purchases thermal power from private thermal power stations at a higher rate and sells them at a lo
