Buying interest in blue chips
The Colombo bourse closed virtually flat yesterday with the indices marginally pointing in opposite directions - the All Share Price Index down 1.81 points (0.03%) while S&P SL 20 was up 7.02 points (0.22%) on a turnover of Rs.762.3 million, up from the previous day’s Rs.416.4 million, with 90 gainers edging out 89 losers while 142 counters closed flat.
"The turnover was good compared to what we’ve been seeing in recent days," a broker said. "There was buying interest in the blue chips including JKH, Aitken Spence, Sampath and the NDB."
There were two block trades for the day with Ceylon Tobacco seeing slightly over 0.1 million shares crossed at Rs.1,080 in a deal worth Rs.116.6 million while Lanka Floor Tiles saw 0.4 million shares crossed at Rs.75 in a transaction worth Rs.30 million.
JKH topped turnover on the floor seeing over 1.1 million shares traded between Rs.217.10 and Rs.219 closing flat at Rs.218 and contributing Rs.246.1 million to turnover. Spence followed closing 90 cents up at Rs.98.90 on over 0.7 million shares done between Rs.98.90 and Rs.99.10 contributing Rs.72.3 million to turnover while Sampath closed 60 cents up at Rs.180.50 on 0.2 million shares done between Rs.179 and Rs.181.50 contributing Rs.36.2 million to turnover.
DFCC and NDB whose merger plans are under discussion demonstrated volume with the NDB closing a rupee up at Rs.180 on nearly 0.2 million shares while DFCC closed flat at Rs.142 on nearly 0.2 million shares.
Distilleries was down a rupee to Rs.202 on 0.1 million shares, Commercial Bank (voting) up a rupee to Rs.121 on nearly 0.2 million shares, Colombo Land up 60 cents to Rs.36.60 on slightly over 0.3 million shares and ComBank (non-voting) down 10 cents to Rs.96.60 on slightly over 0.1 million shares.
Lanka Floor Tiles closed Rs.1.10 down at Rs.75.20 on nearly 0.2 million shares done on the floor while Tokyo (voting) closed flat at Rs.36 on nearly 0.3 million shares.
Softlogic Capital announced the dates for its forthcoming rights issue of 13 new ordinary shares for every 10 existing shares at Rs.3.40 per share. Nearly 389 million new shares will be offered with provisional allotment on Apr. 10 with the rights trading from Apr. 22.
