Turnover tops Rs. 2.5 bn., JKH continues to show volume

ASPI settles over 6,000-point barrier

The Colombo bourse yesterday posted a strong turnover of Rs.2.57 billion, up from the previous day’s Rs.1.94 billion, and both indices were up – the ASPI by 13.69 points (0.23%) while S&P SL20 gained 13.56 points (0.41%) with 106 gainers well ahead of 76 losers while 142 counters closed flat.

"We are now ahead of the 6,000 point resistance barrier with the ASPI closing at 6,018.47 points," broker said. "JKH powered turnover with three crossings totaling 7.5 million shares done at Rs.234 and Rs.233.60 contributing Rs.1.76 billion to turnover."

JKH led the floor trades too with nearly 1.5 million shares done between Rs.231 and Rs.234 although the counter closed Rs.1.50 down at Rs.232.70. These floor trades contributed Rs. 350 million to the day’s turnover.

350,000 Bairaha was crossed at Rs.148 contributing Rs.51.8 million to turnover.

Apart from JKH, Piramal Glass was heavily traded on the floor with nearly 13.6 million shares done between Rs.3.30 and Rs.3.50. The counter closed 10 cents down at Rs.3.40 contributing Rs.45.1 million to turnover. Brokers said the bulk of the Glass shares were done at Rs.3.30 with the share rising thereafter to Rs.3.40 with a few shares traded at Rs.3.50 just before the market closed.

Kelani Valley, which saw unusual quantity, closed 90 cents up at Rs.78.90 on over 0.4 million shares done between Rs.75 and Rs.78.90 contributing Rs.32.1 million to turnover. Brokers said that two big trades at Rs.75 were included in the quantity transacted.

Aitken Spence Hotels closed 20 cents up at Rs.72 on nearly 0.4 million shares done between Rs.70.50 and Rs.72 contributing Rs.25.6 million to turnover. Three large parcels at Rs.71.50 were among the trades, brokers said.

Softlogic Holdings closed flat at Rs.12 on over 1.9 million shares done between Rs.11.80 and Rs.12.40 contributing Rs.23.2 million to turnover.

Other blue chips among most traded stocks included Commercial Bank (voting) closing Rs.2.90 up at Rs.123 on nearly 0.2 million shares, Central Finance, where a dividend is pending, closing 90 cents down at Rs.183.10 on 87,378 shares and Kelani Tyres closing Rs.1.70 up at Rs.55 on nearly 0.2 million shares.

Odel closed Rs.3.40 up at Rs.24 on nearly 0.7 million shares, Bairaha closed Rs.1.30 down at Rs.147.80 on 0.1 million shares and Expolanka continued to gain closing 30 cents up at Rs.9.10 on over 1.6 million shares.
