Again, seems nature of people is to panic, although wise mature people warn and advise not to.
I will wait for this news to emerge on more sources and to be confirmed.
Now, what was supposed to be collected via CGT has to be taken from somewhere else.
STL to be reversed too? Or something else?

Re: capital gain tax reversed?
CGT is not good for an emerging market like us who are dying for investments.
Why we are having so much threats nowadays for investors. Investors are worried and thinking what is the next tax in the pipe line. Why are they threatening us like this. I'm not very comfortable with these kind of threats where policies are brought and changed every month.

Wondering what could the next episode be. This is becoming like a suspense tele-drama where after going through all actions and thrills everything comes back to square one.

This is utter nonsense talking. United Kingdon is a developed country and they are not interested in FDIs but we as a poor developing country desperate for foreign inflows. If the Prime Minister introduce capital gain taxes, sure it would hurt the investments in SL. Investors will runaway from Sri Lanka which they are already doing.

How is will capital gains taxes discourage FDI?

Re: capital gain tax reversed?
Feb 26, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s government should not impose a capital gains tax on the stock market as the market still runs on low trade volumes, Group CEO of Candor Group, Ravi Abeysuriya said.
Capital gains are profits realized on a sale of a non-inventory asset that was purchased at a cost that was lower than the amount realized on the sale.
The most common capital gains are realized from the sale of stocks, bonds, precious metals and property.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe recently hinted that the government would move away from a subsidy regime to a capital empowerment regime through taxing capital.
Prime Minister pointed out that he would change the tax system which is currently acquire more tax from the ordinary people and charge less from the capitalists.
Wickremesinghe however did not clarify whether this would specifically apply to the stock market.
Abeysuriya said a possible imposition of tax on capital gains of stocks will also include capital losses where people will start to claim these losses wiping out the stock market risk factor.
“There is empirical evidence in countries where capital gains tax was brought into the stock market,” he said.
“In March 2012 one country brought in capital gains tax and the market trading volumes came down by 36.5 percent.”
“So unlike in the US, you can kill the market by bringing in capital gains tax to markets with low trade volumes.”
Abeysuriya suggested that it is better to keep the share transactions levy (STL) rather than imposing a capital gains tax for stock markets.
STL is purely based on the transactions taking place in the stock exchange, revenue generated under this fluctuates in accordance with the volume of the share market dealings.
Sri Lanka however removed this levy for all transactions on equity from 01 January 2016 in line with a budget proposal aimed at encouraging share market trading.

This is why Investors are against CGT
Why Citizens and Patriots should not oppose to CGT is given earlier.

Re: capital gain tax reversed?
Your table assumes that tax is 10% and no allowance. Also assumed investor can make 100% every year - that's 90% gain after tax/
Well we still do not have clarity on the tax. It could be more it could be less but I am hoping for less as 10% seems absurd.
But now talking about the missed gain that is gone as tax - this will only happen if the market appreciates so much.
If the government is to earn from this market must go up - that is an incentive for the government to give more attention to the market and develop it - which in turn investors can also benefit. This is my only argument.
We are continuously asking the government to do good for the market. Why not pay this as an incentive?
I'd rather make 27% after tax with a market that is being taken seriously by the government than make 10% or make losses in a one that is not.

CGT in UK has been reduced to 10% (lower tax). There is an allowance of 11000 pounds.

Re: capital gain tax reversed?
If we do not argue and evaluate CGT as investors who will do that ?
I dont mind paying tax and after all what we pay is after a gain.
Why many countries do not charge CGT and why its common among emerging market..
When Ben Barnanke was selected to serve as Chairman of FED he was under the radar for FBI and only after clearance from FBI he was given the job.
Here we don't have such Intelligence Units... Who ever we think loyal to ME is immediately appointed to the highest positions and we don't know such people/ officers ultra motive.
There is no capital gains tax in Singapore but in Sri Lanka.. So even those who have invested in SL will find Singapore more attractive.
Currently there is no capital gains tax in Sri Lanka. That's how it reads in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_gains_tax

Re: capital gain tax reversed?
South Korea
For individuals holding less than 3% of listed company, there is only 0.3% trade tax for sales of shares. Exchange traded funds are exempt from any trade tax. For larger than 3% shareholders of listed companies or for sales of shares in any unlisted company, capital gains tax in South Korea is 11% for tax residents for sales of shares in small- and medium-sized companies. Rates of 22% and 33% apply in certain other situations.[38] Those who have been resident in Korea for less than five years are exempt from capital gains tax on foreign assets- Yin-Yang

Re: capital gain tax reversed?
It seems, this is a complicated subject and have potential to bring in either good results or very bad depending on the way it implemented.
What I would ideally dream of is a win-win situation with brokers; where, brokers are not paid any commission on transaction but only a portion of the capital gains made by the investors.
(Surely, such a decision will bring all brokers to the streets; but make investors very happy and market will surely jump up)
