A huge leak of confidential documents has revealed how the rich and powerful use tax havens to hide their wealth.

Eleven million documents were leaked from one of the world's most secretive companies, Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca.

They show how Mossack Fonseca has helped clients launder money, dodge sanctions and evade tax.

The company says it has operated beyond reproach for 40 years and has never been charged with criminal wrong-doing.

The documents show links to 72 current or former heads of state in the data, including dictators accused of looting their own countries.

Gerard Ryle, director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), said the documents covered the day-to-day business at Mossack Fonseca over the past 40 years.

The documents have been passed to German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, which then shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

BBC reports that 107 media organisations in 78 countries are analysing the documents.

Tax authorities in Australia and New Zealand are probing local clients of a Panama-based law firm at the center of a massive data leak for possible tax evasion.

Other jurisdictions are likely to follow suit following the leak over the weekend of details of hundreds of thousands of clients in more than 11.5 million documents from the files of law firm Mossack Fonseca, based in the tax haven of Panama.

The documents are at the center of an investigation published on Sunday by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and more than 100 other news organizations around the globe.

The German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung said it received the huge cache of documents and shared them with the other media outlets.

Why is it called the Panama Papers?
The tax evaders stashed funds in Mossack Fonseca, a law firm and corporate service provider based in Panama.
The Republic of Panama is located between and North and South America.
Mossack Fonseca, founded in 1977 by German-born Jurgen Mossack and Ramon Fonseca, specializes in commercial law, trust services, investor advisory and international structures. The law firm’s website claims it is one of the largest firms in the corporate services industry and has over 40 offices globally. It also offers intellectual property protection and maritime law services.
The Munich-based daily, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, which got the secret papers and shared it with ICIJ, says in its report that Mossack Fonesca sells anonymous offshore companies around the world. These shell firms enable their owners to cover up their business dealings, no matter how shady.
Mossack Fonesca is the world’s fourth biggest offshore law firm.

Who leaked information?
The story has the pulsating adrenalin rush of a James Bond film. The Munich-based daily Sueddeutsche Zeitun received 11.5 million data spanning a time-frame of 40 years (1997 to 2015) through an encrypted channel. Bastian Obermayer, a reporter of the daily says the whopping information was given gratis with a request for security in return.
After receiving the records of  214,488 offshore entities through emails, financial spreadsheets, passports and corporate records, the ICWJ put 370 journalists from across 80 countries on the job of tracing the hidden offshore assets of a roster of people in over 200 countries, including 12 current and former heads of state.

Fonseca worked with over 14,000 banks, law firms, company incorporators besides other middlemen to set up companies, foundations and trusts for customers. The top preferred 10 countries are: Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Switzerland, United States, Panama, Guatemala, Luxembourg, Brazil, Ecuador and Uruguay
Reactions from people involved
"This is a crime, a felony," Ramon Fonseca, one of the founders of the Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca, told AFP, describing the data that was leaked as a 'limited hack'. He was an advisor to Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela until last month, described the extraction of the data as a "limited hack". The company washed its hands off the expose and said that the role of the firm was limited to that of an intermediary.

Panama prosecutors have launched a criminal probe into allegations of tax evasion and money laundering contained in the Panama Papers.

The state prosecutor's office said the revelations published by global media organisations will be investigated, including claims prominent politicians, celebrities and sportspeople exploited secretive offshore tax regimes.

"The facts described in national and international communication media publications under the term 'Panama Papers' will be the subject of criminal investigation," the office said in a statement.

It comes after Spain, France and Australia announced their own probes following the massive data leak.

Millions of documents leaked to a number of media organisations across Europe apparently show the ways the rich and famous can exploit offshore tax regimes.

Sunny Place 4 Shady Deals

Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca was not overly scrupulous about who it did business with, judging from a massive cache of documents released on Sunday.

The firm helped everyone from fraudsters to top politicians (the categories sometimes overlapping) hide their riches in offshore accounts.

It had doubts about giving Jesus Villanueva, auditor and former director of Venezuela’s state oil company, the right to authorise transactions, however.

“The probabilities of a scandal are higher,” an employee said in an internal memo, citing Villanueva’s access to public funds.

Mossack Fonseca revoked his power of attorney over Blue Sea Enterprises, an account incorporated in 2009. A few months later, he sidestepped the problem by handing responsibility to daughter Anny Josefina Villanueva Silva.

Sitting on the world’s largest oil reserves, Petroleos de Venezuela is under investigation by US authorities for alleged corruption and money laundering.

Blue Sea Enterprises is just one of several shell companies linked to national oil officials or ministers by the “Panama papers”.

The wife of EU climate and energy commissioner Miguel Arias Canete has been named in a huge leak of documents relating to offshore companies called the Panama Papers, which have also led to accusations of shady financial dealings by the leaders of Iceland, Russia and Ukraine.

The findings, published by several media on Monday (4 April), originated in a cache of 11.5 million electronic files belonging to Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca that were initially given by an anonymous source to German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung in early 2015.

The Panama Papers represent the biggest leak the world has ever seen. The 2.6 terabytes of data, containing 11.5 million documents, dwarfs all previous data leaks seen to date.

The data, which exposes the use of tax havens, mostly consists of e-mails, photos, pdf files, spreadsheets, and "excerpts of an internal Mossack Fonseca database" dating back to the 1970s, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung, the German newspaper that received the leaked files.
