Sri Lankan's Mount Everest Expedition
https://www.facebook.com/everestlka/?fref=nf
i have been following their expedition since they started on 1st April. currently they are in Camp 2 (Western Cwm) waiting for a weather window. BAD WEATHER AT THE SUMMIT. will wait for weather to clear to move to Camp 3. (Lhotse Face). from there it will be a 20 hour push to the summit via Camp 4, yellow band, South Col, Balcony, Hillary Step. at 8000 metres (south Col), you enter the death zone !
What an amazing climb. only for the very tough & brave.

Re: Sri Lankan's Mount Everest Expedition
Also Lhotse face is the tough path right?
If not, with guides and a company , everest peaking is becoming a fashion now.
It not tough as then.
If you have not watched, do watch 2015 Everest Film.
Just fantastic.

Re: Sri Lankan's Mount Everest Expedition
i have been studying everest (more than stocks ) last 2 week.
this is a full expedition with Sherpa's etc. cost about usd 100,000 PER HEAD. fully sponsored by Fairway's holding (out friend :-), Seylan Bank ETC.
sls this is an incredibly tough climb. The IMG (International Mountaineering Guild) has set very tough guidelines, rope climbing, ice climbing techniques, acclimatizations etc, as a pre -requisite, to attempt summit. The Khumbu Ice Falls between Everest Base Camp (5400 metres) and Camp 1 is basically a moving Glacier and you have to use 5 ladders tied up to cross crevices !
In the death Zone (above 8000 meters), you have to carry your own 8 Kg oxygen cylinder and climb 70-90 degree sheer ice walls using crampons. not for the faint hearted. they say if you fall asleep in the death zone, you die. about 200 corpses lying around as they cant get them down above 8000 metres.
watch some youtube video's. fascinating.

Re: Sri Lankan's Mount Everest Expedition
1)
I have followed/studied Everest climb history/ saga/dangers keenly after I watched the 2015 Doc/film specially. ( based on 1996 disaster) . So I understand/aware what you are saying 95% .
Ironically if I recall, the Russian guy who survived in the 1996 catastrophe did not use ( or carry) oxygen on the death zone!!!! ( he had hard lungs which you acquire once you climb a few times or come from a cold environment) . Rob Hall died partly as he wanted it ( oxygen canisters).
Just follow the few post discussion below YK and I had which will interest you
http://forum.lankaninvestor.com/t5361p90-films-to-watch-list#51075
2)
Now that you posted this, I recall seeing the news items of the SL duo.
So I now see they are taking the harder path ( not the touristy path) via Lhoste.
It a tough and risky for sure. But not like when George Mallory climbed in 1920s
The climbing companies had various facilities and hand holding in certain areas now ( than old days)
3)
Do watch that Everest film of 2015 ( that talks of the very experienced Rob Hall - mountain guides death and why it happened) . Note Rob Hall's company was one of the pioneering companies to take people to everest summit for paid fee.
So Rob had done it ( climbing the peak) the highest number of time ( if I am not mistake at that time) . He was a real pro but he died mainly as he tried to rescue someone during a storm.
You can get the whole 360 degrees picture of the Everest issues/dangers ( almost all what you said) if you watch that film.
I am not suggesting. I am simply telling you watch it hehe.
You will like it ( I learnt so much stuff from it ). DO NOT MISS.
4)
Yes , i even studied about the bodies still left behind in the death zone area.
It causing pollution and it is a hard task to remove them ( even if found) .
Can write a lot what I found out. It seems easy ask why. But there are huge issues
to do it.
Btw George Mallory body was found only recently if I am not mistaken.

Re: Sri Lankan's Mount Everest Expedition
a perfect song / video for the times. (one of the best videos i have seen).
Floods in Sri- Lanka, people suffering and Jayanthi becomes first Sri-Lankan to summit Mount Everest.
Coldplay - Up & Up
fixing up a car to drive in it again
searching for the water hoping for the rain
up and up, up and up
down upon the canvas, working meal to meal
waiting for a chance to pick your orange field
up and up, up and up
see a pearl form, a diamond in the rough
see a bird soaring high above the flood
it’s in your blood, it’s in your blood
underneath the storm an umbrella is saying
sitting with the poison takes away the pain
up and up, up and up it’s saying
we’re going to get it get it together right now
going to get it get it together somehow
going to get it get it together and flower
oh oh oh oh oh oh
we’re going to get it get it together I know
going to get it get it together and flow
going to get it get it together and go
up and up and up
lying in the gutter, aiming for the moon
trying to empty out the ocean with a spoon
up and up, up and up
how come people suffer how come people part?
how come people struggle how come people break your heart?
break your heart
yes I want to grow yes I want to feel
yes I want to know show me how to heal it up
heal it up
see the forest there in every seed
angels in the marble waiting to be freed
just need love just need love
when the going is rough saying
we’re going to get it get it together right now
going to get it get it together somehow
going to get it get it together and flower
oh oh oh oh oh oh
we’re going to get it get it together I know
going to get it get it together and flow
going to get it get it together and go
up and up and up
and you can say what is, or fight for it
close your mind or take a risk
you can say it’s mine and clench your fist
or see each sunrise as a gift
we’re going to get it get it together right now
going to get it get it together somehow
going to get it get it together and flower
oh oh oh oh oh oh
we’re going to get it get it together I know
going to get it get it together and flow
going to get it get it together and go
up and up and up
we’re going to get it get it together right now
going to get it get it together somehow
going to get it get it together and flower
oh oh oh oh oh oh
we’re going to get it get it together I know
going to get it get it together and flow
going to get it get it together and go
up and up and up
oh-oh oh, oh-oh oh oh oh oh
fixing up a car to drive in it again
when you’re in pain
when you think you’ve had enough
don’t ever give up
don’t ever give up

Johann at 8300m!
Many, many people have asked why Johann didn't summit: "As the first Sri Lankans to attempt the summit of Mount Everest, and to have done so as a team, we are both very excited and overjoyed about our achievements of reaching the highest points in the world - a new record for Sri Lanka! The large number of climbers on Saturday 21 May, our summit day, meant that there were many queues and bottlenecks en route. These delays affected Johann's timing and resulted in him being compelled to turn back 300m from the summit because of the risk of running out of oxygen."

Re: Sri Lankan's Mount Everest Expedition
(Last read that the cost of such an attempt would be around US $ 70,000 per person).
