First drug dealers, now gambling – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Tuesday he intends to put a stop to his country’s freewheeling online gambling industry altogether. Having gained notoriety around the world with an aggressive campaign to stamp out drugs – through the extra-judicial killing of suspects – Duterte made his plans known in a budget speech heavily focused on populist measures. The Philippines has attracted many online companies over the last decade who have set up servers aimed at overseas punters.

Riding on a fintech boom, China is going cashless, writes Johan Nylander in a special report. In Shenzhen, Johan can find hardly anyone paying with hard currency.

The markets are on edge, write Steve Wang and Benny Kung. In 2017, China’s financial institutions look set to face multiple threats: higher money market rates, a further slide in the yuan-dollar exchange rate, and intermittent shocks from high-profile defaults in the nascent bond market.

Alibaba had a busy day day. First, the e-commerce giant’s founder Jack Ma had a chat with US president-elect Donald Trump about his ideas on how to create 1 million US jobs – bringing farmers and small businesses onto its platform to sell to Chinese consumers over the next five years. “We had a great meeting,” Trump told reporters on January 9 as he accompanied Ma back down to the lobby of his Trump Tower headquarters after the meeting. Then Alibaba and Intime Retail Group’s founder announce a joint bid to take the Chinese department store operator private for HK$19.79 billion (US$2.55 billion). Alibaba Group chief executive Daniel Zhang said: “Those who cling on to the old ways of retailing will be disrupted.”

What’s in store for Southeast Asia now that Donald Trump has the keys to the White House? Our contributors look at Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines. David Hutt, in Phnom Penh, sees the prospect of deteriorating relations with the West as Cambodia pursues greater economic and strategic co-operation with China. In Vietnam, Helen Clark anticipates that the country’s recently-concluded US$10 billion deal with Exxon Mobil will likely create new ripples in the contested South China Sea. And from the Philippines, Richard Javad Heydarian writes that ties with the US – which hit a low point as Rodrigo Duterte clashed with Barack Obama on human rights – may be quickly restored if, as is likely, Trump adopts a more pragmatic stance.

In a deal valued at around US$800 million, Ant Financial, the payment affiliate of Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba has announced its intention to buy US money-transfer company MoneyGram International. The indebted American company is second only to Western Union among money-transfer providers.

Since the end of the Cold War, America has been exporting a mirror image of its domestic self: not the classic combo of democracy and freedom, but guns, prisons, and security forces, writes William J. Astore. Globally, the label “Made in the USA” has increasingly come to be associated with violence and war. Weapons, warriors and fear are shaping up as the New Order for America under Donald Trump, who is like a Batman villain, a man who doesn’t believe in heroes — only in himself.

Pakistan’s ultimatum to Afghan refugees living on its soil to leave the country by March 31 or face deportation has evoked much apprehension among the latter, writes Sudha Ramachandran. They are being forced back, but the situation in Afghanistan is hardly conducive to their return. The Global Peace Index notes that Afghanistan is the third least peaceful country in the world after Syria, and Iraq, where the overall security situation worsened “considerably” in 2016.

A tiny 0.1 point decrease in China’s manufacturing PMI to 51.3 in January, released over the Lunar New Year break, excited almost none globally apart from the news robots at the major financial media outlets, writes Steve Wang. At Asia Times, we can’t afford to be like them, so everything is done like newshounds did it in the 1960s – old-fashioned grunt work. He found there was something much deeper at work here than initially meets the eye.

Commentators are in a frenzy over an upcoming smackdown between US President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The contest, much like a pro wrestling matchup could come, for example, if Trump tries to pressure Kim not to test an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear payload to American territory, writes Bradley K. Martin. After Kim in his New Year’s address boasted that his military was in the “final stages” of preparation for such a test, Trump was quick to tweet his initial response: “It won’t happen.”

Amid global criticism after Trump’s executive order last week that suspended the US refugee programme and restricted entry to the United States for travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, Julie L. Diplomacy has been the order of the day for US President Donald Trump, with his first task being a chat with his Chinese counterpart. In the first phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump, presumably via a translator, reaffirmed Washington’s “One China” policy in an apparent effort to ease tensions after angering Beijing by questioning a major plank of Sino-US relations. Trump “agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honor our ‘One China’ policy,” the White House said, adding the leaders had “extended invitations to meet in their respective countries.”

Still in a diplomatic mood, Trump is expected to be a congenial host during a visit by Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife Akie Abe, whose jet landed at Joint Base Andrews just outside the US capital, Washington. Harry J. Kazianis writes that both leaders have an agenda – Abe will be keen to lock in critical commitments in the flesh from Trump on two key threats Japan faces: China and North Korea, while the Donald will be keen to have some positive stories in the news cycle.

Last but by no means least on diplomacy and relationships, or should it be hardware, the Philippines took delivery of a shipment of new counterinsurgency equipment from the United States – 400 grenade launchers, 85 sniper rifles and three unmanned aerial vehicles, writes Richard Javad Heydarian. The February 1 delivery aimed at tackling rebels in Mindanao is the latest indication that President Rodrigo Duterte aims to put relations back on track with the US under Trump.

In a three-part series, Doug Tsuruoka investigates the challenges for the Trump administration in rebuilding crumbling infrastructure in the US. How will the president raise the money needed to fund the US$1 trillion plan, how railways are the biggest hurdle to his plan to renovate and modernise the country’s infrastructure and that he may need the cutting-edge technology of both Japan and China to bring American infrastructure into the 21st century.

As authorities step up efforts to curb the flow of money offshore, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) inspection team unveiled a series of restrictions on the digital unit following a meeting on Wednesday with officials from nine Beijing-based bitcoin trading platforms.

Donald Trump pledged to honor the One-China policy in a lengthy February 9 phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping and in doing so restored a cornerstone of Sino-US ties that he had threatened to upend by accepting a phone call from Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen. However, warns Nicholas R. Lardy, Trump hardliner Peter Navarro’s stance toward Beijing means a trade war is still possible and it is a fight that neither China nor the US would win.

As Malaysian police detain more suspects for the assassination of North Korea’s genial former heir apparent, the murder is set to become a complex diplomatic issue for Kuala Lumpur, reports The Asia Times. While police are carrying on with a murder investigation by detaining a third person, the Malaysia deputy prime minister stressed that the bizarre killing will not affect ties between the two countries. This assurance came despite US and South Korean government sources saying they believed Pyongyang agents carried out the assassination.

Vietnam and TPP: When US President Donald Trump last month pulled America from the Trans-Pacific Partnership multilateral trade pact, the potential losses to Hanoi were significant. However, writes Ha Nguyen, Vietnamese businesses are now looking towards the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, scheduled to come into effect in 2018, to expand their markets and the deal should serve as a model for Europe’s future economic engagement with other ASEAN nations.

ISIS in Libya: Today is the sixth anniversary of an uprising that was meant to usher in a new era of freedom for Libya yet the country has descended into uncontrollable chaos. Sami Moubayed reports that in the six years since Nato famously stepped in to protect civilians after a popular revolution toppled the regime of Gaddafi, shortages and hyperinflation are the norm and ISIS is thriving in the misery of a broken nation.

Samsung Group arrest: The vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Lee Jae-yong, has been arrested over his alleged role in a Samsung corruption scandal that led parliament to impeach South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Reuters reports that the 48-year-old was taken into custody at the Seoul Detention Centre late on Thursday evening, dealing a fresh blow to the world’s biggest maker of smartphones.

Taiwan and Trump: The American President’s decision to question the “one China” policy and then back down has led several international commentators to say he lost his first fight with China’s communist leader. Xuan Loc Doan writes that Trump is now being referred to as “a paper tiger” – a term once used by Mao Zedong to describe America – and says his Taiwan about-face is likely to undermine his administration’s efforts to push Beijing to adopt policies that are more beneficial to US interests.

A Lego enthusiast in the Philippines by the name of Jergs Correa recently kicked open the doors to a new restaurant that serves 10 different burgers, made with buns that resemble stackable colorful toy bricks.

Between the patties and the brick buns, guests can get toppings like mac and cheese, bacon bits, caramelized onions, and barbecue sauce. Here’s a peek at some of Brick Burger’s house specialties:

Taste of Asia Empty Duterte's Fiercest Critic Has Been Arrested

    Post by කිත්සිරි ද සිල්වා Fri Feb 24, 2017 9:04 am

A senator in the Philippines who has led the political fight against President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs was arrested on Friday morning on charges that she herself benefitted the drug trade while serving as the country's Secretary of Justice.

The senator, Leila de Lima, has fiercely denied the allegations since Duterte first levied them in August, describing them in a statement Friday as "manufactured stories" intended to make an example of her and "to intimidate, silence, and destroy anyone who dares challenge" Duterte.

"My arrest is an appalling sign of the return of a power-hungry, morally bankrupt and abusive government," she said. " The Filipino people know your style, Mr. President. To put the rule of law in your hands, silence your critics, and destroy those who will go against your caprices."
