    As development in India has raced ahead, demand for firewood, pasture and land for building has destroyed vast tracts of forest.

    In fact, since 2013, more than 2,500 square kilometres of very dense and mid-dense forests have been wiped out, according to India Today.

    Despite this, the Indian government reports that the total area of forested land has increased and new efforts are being made to expand them even further. The ultimate aim is 33% forest cover.

    under the 100 day program, the ya aha pal aney government promised to plant one three in 50 days. but due to boo-rat-crazy-tic governing style, the grama sevaka telling no approval. the divisor national secretary asking for commis. so the GA telling provincial minister who telling Ran-Nil. Ran Nil meeting Lipsky from Harvard at Davos, who telling to hold a seminar to discuss. but environmental impact survey is not there. then WB / IMF informing Green Peace that we are not planting. now Grama sevaka is teeling World Bank, drought noh, how to plant. and asking for more money.

    but i hear, all the politikas are planting trees like hell for illegal felling. why ? Treasury needs paper to print money. lol! lol! lol!

    Deforestation in SL decreased by 0.4 per cent in past decade: UN
    2017-03-04

    According to the report issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, deforestation in Sri Lanka has decreased to 0.4 per cent during the past decade, Conservator General of Forests Anura Sathurusinghe said yesterday.

    Mr. Sathurusinghe told the Daily Mirror that the FAO report, issued every five years, has rated Sri Lanka as a country with less deforestation during the period of years 2000 – 2010. “During the past decade (2000-2010), the deforestation in the country has decreased to 58, 791 hectares of forest land, which was rated as 1.3 per cent as against 104, 380 hectares during the period 1990 – 2000. At present the FAO has rated Sri Lanka as a country with minimum forest cover,” he said.

    Meanwhile, he said they had decided to launch an web portal to detect the places where deforestation was prevalent around the country. “The website will be launched in the coming month. Any person who has information of deforestation taking place in their areas can inform us so that we can investigate it,” he said, adding this would help immeasurably to control deforestation in the country.     Some may describe " deforestation in Sri Lanka has decreased to 0.4 per cent during the past decade " as a good sign, but it is not in fact.
    We have to do somethings both individually and collectively to reduce our demand for wood and to increase the forest cover or soon we will also be like sub saharan country.

    Totally agreed. Upper watershed management should be the top priority.
