Whats ailing Sri Lanka ? Why we are what we are!

Post by slstock on Tue May 08, 2018 9:33 am

WHATS AILING SRI LANKA?

Why are we , what we are?

~~~~~~~
Please note this is not my thread. This is for Sri Lanka , I mean the beautiful country we were proudly born to. Everyone is welcome to contribute and post material as they encounter in future to this thread to make educational discussions to show why Sri Lanka is at this level when we could have been the next Singapore.
~~~~~~~

Below is what I posted in another thread with different title.

"I just saw this thread and read people's comments with interest.

I saw Kithsiri asking younger Gens to leave the country.
I saw people saying Sri Lanka is at point of no return.
There was a question why Dr S Amunugama hasn't showed his capacity.

I usually keep asking the forum where is the problem in Sri Lanka?  But no one address the real issues yet.

Let me put it this way

1) Who sends Scoundrels and Jokers to parliament who in turn appoints further henchman/robber/jokers to  destroy and rob the country ?

2) Who does not recognize the Decent  and the Capable in the country WHO WANTS TO MAKE A CHANGE  but enough people are not behind them  to support the cause demotivating them ?

3) Who lets the old woman who robbed 2 Mangos to satisfy her hunger rot in Jail while Multi billion theives  allowed to let go ?

4) If one thinks  the uneducated/rural mass  are at fault for voting  blindly to send the  rogues to parliament  ( usually from the 2 big parties  UNP or SLFP)

OKAY , THEN WHAT ARE THE EDUCATED AND CAPABLE PEOPLE DOING?

5) Even when we know some people rob the country left and right , why do they always get big votes at the elections giving them more power to do their biding ?

We can talk a lot.  But in real life how many of us

a) fearlessy stand up  to support when someone is trying to make a change .
Just as Exs : hate/like him or not Ranjan Ramanayake is not a thief and  is trying to expose the rogues within his political limits. There are few more in JVP who are the same but has no power ( they talk only but can't do anything).

b) try to live as an example to others / younger genrations

Ex  i)  Do you cross the road at any place or cross  at a Zebra crossing?
    ii) Are you responsibly disposing Garbage
    iii)   Since we think CSE is usually for non innocent + cunning people,
      do you also trying to join them ( as you can't beat them) or do you try to act
      /earn  ethically ?

Before we start elsewhere .. we SHOULD START WITH ....

Don't forget Malaysia and Singapore was worse than us at some point.
Now they are superior to SL in many ways. "

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOW as a first step take a look at the below pics which were taken after Vesak. Who is responsible ? Is it the Politicians? Is it the Police ?
Do you think only people from rural areas contributes  this mess.
I will bet my CDB shares most of this mess was created by the so Called "smart ass educated" city people.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Folks, do your part and add relevant comments and material to this thread time to time to keep it going. We need to first identify  the issues in our country before we find cures.

Re: Whats ailing Sri Lanka ? Why we are what we are!

Post by කිත්සිරි ද සිල්වා on Tue May 08, 2018 12:20 pm

This is the glimpse of the reality in Sri Lanka.
(Written on my personal blog a few years back but it is more appropriate now than then)

We all take our kids on our marketing trips.

Put them on a trolley cart and act as we are on a race track.

Hit an old lady from behind in the aisle, then whisk pass cursing her and without even an apology.

Stop near the “ Fruits and Nuts “ section and throw a few of them in your mouth before stuffing a few more in his / her mouth.

Sure enough, the toddler can’t read the notice posted there.

Eating is not allowed

But he/she was just happy for the freebies, Papa / Mama has stuffed in his / her mouth.

One day we go to see his / her choir practice session and find him/her standing inconspicuously in the very last row.

What happened?

We ask him/her while heading home.

Teacher says I am too tall to be in the first row.

Next day the child is sent off to practice with a few cookie jars in a nice reusable bag that we have brought in on our last overseas holiday.

“ Don’t forget to give it only to the teacher’s hand ”.

Pick up time in the evening and when you reached there, the training session is still on.

Amazingly, our tall kid has now found a place in the front row suddenly.

Heading home, he/she was jabbering happily.

The teacher asked where we got those.

The USA.

Wow!

Now the kid got a reserved place in the front from there on.

Oh ! what a few foreign cookies can do someone's self-esteem?

Then comes the time for proper schooling.

We prepare our kids for the most dreaded school admission interview.

So a mock interview was set up at home.

Pretending you are the Principle of the school we ask “Where do you stay”?

The kid is happy to say the only and truthful answer he/she ever know.

But we are happy to interrupt and say “Oh no! don’t say that”.

“ Say you are from Thimbirigasyaya ”.

The kid protests with pleading eyes “ But I don’t know where is that place ”, " We are from Rajgama ".

We say “ Don’t worry about it, it is all taken care already and just say Thimbirigasyaya only ".

He nods but utterly confused.

He/she goes to play sports and one day we find him/her sitting on the bench watching others practice.

Now we know the answer to that dilemma.

Next practice session he/she goes with a much heavier reusable bag.

And on the matches’ day, you will see someone else’s kid is on the bench, watching haplessly.

Then we go home and celebrate.

problem is not with people, but with the system..

We got to correct the system.

To correct the system we should elect good leaders.

good leaders never come from UNP,or SLFP or SLPP..

people should find an alternatives..

Yes good systems are indeed needed.

But systems are only created by the people for the people.

Systems introduced can be bad or good depending on the intention of the party who introduces it . ( In North Korea , there is system that forces people to bow to the Supreme Leader statue whether they like it or not. )

Even if the system is good, what happens if majority of the people don't want to follow it?

1) In the 1st photo above it shows  there are designated places/containers  ( a system is already in place) to throw garbage. But majority don't care and litter all over.

2) A system/law  was proposed and introduced to install meters for 3 wheelers .  We all agree it is good. But 3 wheel drivers  object and now there are delays again to implement it.

3) I recall a clocking system ( to report time of  duty)  was   proposed to be introduced at Hospitals. But hospital staff objected ( we know why)

4) For  any good system  to be successful , the majority needs to be morally responsible to accept it and follow it.

Ofcourse the other option is to make people do it by force or via severe punishment. Then again, at Galle Face , how can law enforcement monitor and control 10000s of people who litter ?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ultimately the want , ethics,  morals and behavior of the greater  society will dictate how an overall society  conduct itself.
a)  Bad politicians or workers are result of the overall society allowing , tolerating and letting them behave that way.
b) Recent incident ( outside SL). I was waiting for a bus. The Bus driver took off to go somewhere and was  3 minutes late to return and start the bus. Several people started complaining. When Driver  appeared to not care , several people confronted him and some also reported him to the Bus company. The driver was not seen driving that bus after that Wink
Good people create good systems and the bad people violate them very often.
Good people execute the good systems to the letter and the bad people get together to get rid of the good executive.
Then the good system is disregarded and discarded by both the good and the bad people because they see what happens to the good executive who executed the system to the letter.
Finally, no system exists in such a shoddy society like Sri Lanka.
See what happened to the new election laws. All boasted of it prior to the election and when they failed miserably at the elections they now wants to amend the laws. They even accused the Elections Commission.
See what happened to yahapalanaya systems to tackle corruptions. All boasted of a corruption free Sri Lanka in the future but now when one by one is caught in the system net irrespective of their status or power they disabled some of the most efficient arms of fighting corruptions.
when bad people violate the system they will be punished by the law.. legal system is part of the overall system..
If bad people escape from being punished then the problem is with the legal system..
The problem is not with the system, as someone mentioned but lacking the willingness to execute/run the system properly.
Who are these bad people?
I can post my Dash Cam videos daily and almost all are not following the basic traffic laws and so are the pedestrians.
If the system is faulty, then it needs to be corrected.
If the system is OK but the executioners are failing, then they need to be changed.
But are we ready to go through the agony of changes?
I doubt very much. Surprised
Chicken Fried Rice any one ?
In Sri Lanka at many regular food places/restaurants , if your order a portion of Chicken Fried rice or some meat Curry  , how often can you get the same quality/consistency on consecutive visits?
How often do you get a "katta ( bone) instead of real meat?"
Do we have to tell the waiter  "Please as favor can you put  good pieces of chicken ?"
Even after paying them money for a  nice looking product they advertise we need to beg to get them to
give what they promised/advertised !!!
In Developed nations, the quality of food served is rather consistent and if one doesn't get what they ordered,  almost all restaurants will  without argument or harassment replace your order.
If they say chicken , actually the main component or highlight of the  dish will be chicken.
In SL, I remember well in my younger days , how I  fished  for non existent pieces of "mixed chicken" in  the friend rice!
What makes the difference ?
Beyond  any laws and competition between players, there is bigger fact why it happens in developed nations.
Customer satisfaction and decency.
In SL ... what is the issue?
THIS POST MAY LOOK LIKE ITS ABOUT CHICKEN DISHES. BUT IT IS TO HIGHLIGHT A DEEPER ISSUE( . Btw if you don't eat meat , just substitute "chicken" with Tofu
ps : notice the chicken fried rice photo above. I can gurantee you , there  many pieces of chicken hidden inside the rice ( Most places quality control and measure the chicken ( any other main entree)  they put in dishes. So the quality  of the product remains the same whether people ask or not)
Selfishness is huge issue in Sri Lanka.
South Asians don't have enough sex thanks to Queen Victoria. All the bottled up stuff messes up the entire thinking process. Suspect
Super!!
Thanks to five of you.
This is the problem here in this country.
Not enough leaders and owners among us.
Most of us think, leader and owners are limited to the political clan.
We each of us should think we are the leaders and owners of the country if we are to make a change.
Still our systems are geared mostly to producing followers and thieves.
You guys have to changed it yourselves, individually.
Yep!
Who was Abdul ?
Abdul was  a clerk in India during Victorian times.
He was chosen to go to England to present Queen Victoria a Mohur ( gold coin) for her Golden Jubilee and work temporary as Servant.
Queen Victoria grew very fond of Abdul  and a  deep friendship grew between them angering the Royal Family, British politicians and Courtiers.  They considered a lowly Indian not worthy of a Queens attention and they also were jealous of the Queen befriending Abdul.  She even later made Abdul her Munshi.
Upon Queen's  death the royal family and courtiers, burnt all evidence and correspondences of   Abdul and Queen to HIDE IT FROM HISTORY.
In reality from what I read, there was no evidence of a physical relationship between Abdul and the Queen. It was a deeper bond. But the British didn't want to have anything  to do with lowly Indians/Asians. So ... they wanted to hide it.
ps : So how was the hidden  relationship between Abdul and Queen came to light ? It another interesting story for another time.
So it was a platonic love?
(JRJ was accused of doing such an act to erase the past). Shocked
