Re: Coronavirus Updates
The best practices for controlling an infectious disease like COVID-19 aren’t easy to follow—keeping six feet apart from others, wearing face masks in public, and, if you’re a health care worker, wearing shields to protect your eyes as well.
But in a study published Monday in The Lancet, researchers provide the strongest evidence yet that these practices do indeed lower the risk of spreading the virus.
An international group of scientists, led by senior author Dr. Holger Schunemann, professor of clinical epidemiology and medicine at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, analyzed 172 studies conducted in 16 countries that looked at the connection between social distancing, wearing masks, and wearing eye protection, and the risk of transmitting the virus. The studies included people with COVID-19 infections in addition to those with two other diseases caused by coronaviruses, SARS and MERS. The studies were observational, meaning that they tracked infection rates among people who practiced any of the aforementioned behaviors. Of the 172 studies, 44 (involving more than 25,000 participants) also included comparisons between those who followed the behaviors and those who did not.
When it comes to social distancing, the analysis showed that, on average, the risk of getting infected when remaining 1 meter (a little more than 3 ft) from an infected person was about 3%, while staying less than 1 meter apart upped the risk to 13%. The further people stand away from one another, the lower their risk. In fact, the risk drops by half for every additional meter of distancing up to 3 meters (about 10 ft).
“What we tried to do was bring everything together and sort out what distance might be the most effective, rather than an arbitrary threshold,” says Schunemann. Based on how far respiratory droplets from coughs or sneezes generally travel, most public health policies currently recommend standing at least 2 meters (about 6.7 ft) apart in public areas, which the study findings support. “The virus doesn’t know what a meter is, or what six feet is,” says Schunemann. “What this evidence suggests is that two meters, or 6.7 feet, appears that it might be more protective than one meter or three feet.”

ECONOMYNEXT – The number of COVID 19 positive patients increased by 40 yesterday after 32 returnees from the Middle-East tested positive, the Health Department said, taking the total infected since the outbreak to 1,683.
Of them, 27 are returnees from Qatar, 3 from Kuwait and 1 each from Dubai and Russia, Col. (Media) Vijitha Hettiarachchi from the COVID 19 Task Force said.
The others are 7 Navy personnel and 1 family member from the Navy.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government continues to bring back people wanting to return home.
According to the latest update released by the Ministry of Foreign Relations, as of May 27, 42,522 people from 123 countries have applied to return to Sri Lanka.
“Of these, migrant workers amounted to 34,881 of which 20,893 are living in the Middle East, while 4,961 were short term visa holders, and 2,016 were students,” the Ministry said.
From Kuwait 466 have returned with 379 benefiting from the amnesty given to illegals and had surrendered to the camps between 21-25 April the Ministry said. Eighty-seven were from Kuwaiti detention centres and prisons.
Although the Sri Lankan government had requested the Kuwaiti authorities to conduct PCR tests for COVID 19 before these returnees boarded the flights home, the Kuwaiti authorities had said this would not be possible.
However, they had said anyone with COVID 19 symptoms would not be boarded.
The Ministry says that the “the greatest vulnerability was in the Maldives, but particularly in Greater Male where a red alert has been declared by the Maldivian Government, which has explicitly requested foreign governments to evacuate their citizens.”
“Of approximately 7000 presently seeking repatriation from the Maldives, almost 2000 are in Greater Male. On 14 May, 284 were repatriated and special approval had to be secured to evacuate a few medical emergency cases from outer Male” the Ministry said.
The Foreign Ministry has consulted the Maldivian authorities, who have expressed willingness for PCR tests to be done in advance on Sri Lankans to be repatriated, provided that PCR test kits and medical personnel from Sri Lanka would be made available to conduct these tests. (Colombo, June 3, 2020)

Re: Coronavirus Updates
The number of Americans with confirmed case of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 climbed above 1.8 million on Tuesday, amid concerns that protests about the death of George Floyd last week, and people gathering in groups as lockdowns are lifted, will spark a fresh wave of infections.

Re: Coronavirus Updates
and spread in China, USA and Europe etc.
I think Latin America will be the hot spot now.
It could be a disaster if it spreads in that region due to poverty
and rugged terrain .
Brazil president Bolsonaro, is a maniac.
He called Corona as the "Little Flu" and dismissed it as threat in March.
He said Brazilians are immune to it.
Social distancing is useless he said.
He even participated in Anti Lockdown rallies.
Then recently he said "the worst has passed".
Mexico is also on now catching up.
Brazil has 200+ million poplation
Mexico 125+ million.
It seems it is only beginning in the region.
And if it catches up, god bless.
Fortunately for Sri Lanka, our exposure to South America is so very
less economic wise.

Re: Coronavirus Updates
However what we see in USA & Brazil is mass community spreading as both countries are oppose to complete lockdowns till this moment. In India we now see community spreading not because they were not in lockdown but the population and the education level of vast majority are preventing them from understanding the risk of Covid 19.
I think the rise in the infection count during next three months will be coming from USA, Brazil, Mexico as well as India. USA's total count soon will surpass 2mn and Brazil will hit 1mn. And India will come third with 500,000 count.

Re: Coronavirus Updates
Even I do not know whether I am a carrier or not unless tested.
And those who get infected will not die as well.

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is setting strict guidelines for all diplomatic personnel entering the country with regard to the prevention of the spread of COVID 19, the Ministry of Foreign Relations said.
All diplomats and their family members entering Sri Lanka for the first time or on re-entry would have to submit the results of a PCR test done 72 hours before arrival or undergo a mandatory test at the airport, a release from the Ministry said.
This follows the reported refusal by a United States diplomat to undergo a PCR test for the COVID 19 virus at the airport on arrival on Thursday night, citing diplomatic privileges.
Media reports quoted Airport and Aviation Services Vice Chairman Rajeewasiri Sooriyaarachchi as saying that the diplomat had refused to undergo a PCR test.
This evening, June 5, the Ministry of Foreign Relations said it has circulated the revised instructions for diplomatic staff to all missions.
According to the release the Missions are expected to inform the Ministry the details of their diplomats and their families’ entries and re-entries to the country well in advance to obtain prior approval.
These persons need to submit PCR test reports obtained within 72 hours prior to their departure from their respective countries.
If the members of the Diplomatic staff and their family members are unable to provide PCR test reports, they would be subjected to a mandatory PCR test at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.
Heads of Mission and family members will self-quarantine at the Official Residences. All other arriving Diplomatic staff and their family members will have to follow quarantine procedures at a hotel, recommended by the Government of Sri Lanka (if independent/separate residences are not available), for a period of 14 days, subject to concurrence and supervision of the Heads of Mission.
The Foreign Ministry further notes that travel by Diplomatic Officers to Sri Lanka will be approved, subject to their concurrence to follow the above procedures issued by the Government of Sri Lanka.
US Embassy spokesperson Nancy VanHorn said that US diplomatic staff adhere carefully to Sri Lankan COVID-19 guidelines, including quarantine restrictions, in close coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
She said that the arrival of US diplomatic staff to Sri Lanka also complies with the norms and procedures outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, just as it applies to arrival of Sri Lankan and other diplomatic staff to the United States. (Colombo June 5, 2020)

Most world leaders have done what they could to save lives, with varying degrees of success. But the economy of every country has suffered.
The focus will now shift to saving livelihoods because economies cannot take it any more. India, for example, has already started relaxing the lock-down despite the COVID curve continuing to rise.
The challenge for Sri Lanka would be to open up the economy while continuing with proactive testing, tracing and quarantine. Striking the right balance between lives and livelihoods is the most important thing.
