To clarify about Radar usage for Air Traffic Controlling I write the following.
There is vast area of Indian Ocean without radar coverage. ATC use Radar for approach - departure controlling only.
Radar sends radio signals from the antenna towards monitoring area ( mostly 360 degrees) and analyse signals reflected from air crafts to determine their locations. No one in the air plane can switch off it. Due to high power needed its range is limited to few hundred kilometers. We have about 140 Km coverage from Colombo , as far as I Know. This is called Primary Radar.
Rest of the area is covered by data sent from air crafts to the controlling tower in addition to verbal radio messages. Transponders like ADS-B are used for this system. ADS collect location data from GPS and other data from systems in the aircraft and transmit to the receiving centers in ground.
They suspect somebody switch off this and hide MH370 from monitor screens in the ground. By that time the plane was out from the Primary Radar coverage.
This means if the plane escaped from KL Radar it can come even towards Sri Lanka without any detection.
If you go Southwards from Sri Lanka apart from Maldives, I think Australian ATC may have a Radar fixed in Cocos Island and USAF have many in Diego Garsia and in Gan Islands (South Maldives) .(rem: I did not show them in the map) .
Interestingly Diego Garcia ( US Army Base) is in reachable distance from kL by MH370.

" The US further claims that they have identified approx 8 extra "handshake" connections made between the SATCOM system on MH 370 and satellites. These were made every 30 minutes and did not transmit any data.
These 8 signals strongly imply that the aircraft was aloft for a further 4 to 4 hours 29 minutes.
It also means that the SATCOM was powered on and active, so no complete power outage.
However all other communication could have been disabled by an incident on board, but US thinking (rightly or wrongly) is currently inclined towards a takeover scenario."

But I fail to see the objective, where could they land without detection ?

But it is improbable that this was successful considering that there has been no news till now. Perhaps it went down crashing at a very different location.

BREAKING NEWS: Investigators have concluded that the plane was hijacked and diverted off course, according to reports.
The strange journey outlined by the military data suggests that the plane was being controlled by a hijacker.
According to the military data, the plane rose to an altitude of 45,000 feet — about 10,000 feet higher than cruising Boeing 777-200 planes are supposed to fly — and later plummeted to 23,000 feet after disappearing from civilian radar screens. The plane made sharp turns throughout the journey towards the Indian Ocean.
The erratic movements of the aircraft after it diverted course and flew over the country also raise questions about why the military did not respond in real time to the flight emergency.
Malaysian officials have acknowledged that military radar may have picked up the plane, but have said they took no action because it did not appear hostile !.

According to below article, Sri Lanka could have been a landing place too?

What ever , the initial speculation /analysis in the forum was very good.
The issues is , is it a failed Hijack or a sucessfull one.
Am looking from the view of the innocent lives on board. Hope they landed somewhere safely.

Don't know yet
Why ?
1) political
2) Religious
3) Military cover up as there was someone or multiple parties of importance on board
Effect tourist Arrivals in Sri Lanka?
I don;t see a direct relationship do you?
But looking at the latest reports and the direction of it flying , Sri Lanka might have been a landing site for the plane ;-)

I scanned about 1000 sections.
http://www.tomnod.com/
Unfortunately they are concentrating to the areas near Sumathra and Andaman Islands.
You ca't go to the places you guess
I feel the plane should be in a far away place.
Somewhere in deep sea closer to Sri Lanka (#1 in below Map)
or if they tried to fly towards Iran , down somewhere in #2 area .

A sat signal located off Perth !
Unconfirmed reports say the last satellite transmission from MH370 has been traced to the Indian Ocean off Australia, far from where searches have taken place.
Inmarsat (ISAT), based in London, picked up “routine, automated signals” from Flight 370, according to a statement e-mailed by Jonathan Sinnatt, a spokesman.
Flight 370 may have flown beyond its last known position about 1,000 miles west of Perth, and that location may not be an indication of where the plane ended up, said the person, who spoke on condition of not being named because of the sensitivity of the information.
