Fourth Highest Suicide Rate In The World Recorded In Sri Lanka
According to the report that was released today, the suicide rate in Sri Lanka lies at a 28.8 for every 100,000 people against the global average of 11 per 100,000 persons.
Sri Lanka has been ranked fourth out of a total of 172 countries.
While its findings have revealed that men are almost twice as likely as women to take their lives, the report has also noted that the plight highlighted in the report might be severely underplaying the actual situation due to poor data collection on suicides in most countries resulted by the stigma attached to the issue and due to suicides still being illegal in a handful of nations including Sri Lanka and India.
The United Nations also said one person commits suicide every 40 seconds more than all the yearly victims of wars and natural disaster, with the highest toll among the elderly.
