පාලමක් සහ සමුද්‍ර අභ්‍යන්තර ටනලයක් ආකාරයෙන් ක්‍රියාත්මක විමට නියමිත බවත් කෙසේ වෙතත් මේ සදහා ඇස්තමේන්තු ගත වියදම හා අවසන් කිරිමට අපේක්ෂිත කාලය තවම පැවසිමට කල් වැඩි බවද එම වාර්තා කියයි.

A road and rail link between India's Rameswaram and Sri Lanka's Thalaimannar could be a reality soon as the government of India has asked Asian Development Bank to carry out pre-feasibility study for financing the project across Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka.


A short boat ride used to connect the railway lines that ended at Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka and Dhanushkodi in India, which was in operation till 1966.


The Project may be a combination of bridge and underwater tunnel which may allow unhindered movement of ships. As the project is in the conceptual stage, it is too early to comment on the time bound programme of this project.


However, the government of SriLanka is yet to give its nod to the project, Minister of State for Road Road Transport & Highways, Pon. Radhakrishnan informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Sri Lankans should appoint a government who knows the value of Sovereignty

Singapore and Malaysia has road and rail links for years. Massive amount or tourism and trading activities going on. Entering from one country to another follows usual custom and visa procedures . Both countries remain sovereign states. Both are well developed countries now.

Message - Both country leaders had innovative ideas, they are not frogs in the well!

I feel huge Indian market with rapidly growing middle class will be accessible via such links, some time with some adverse effects too

So this deal is not good for India, We have plenty of politically backed drug dealers and we are self sufficient in heroin. India at risk in that sense I guess.

Capital punishment for drug possession in both countries. But narcotics are available in both countries.

This idea of trans national highway is not a new one. It had been under discussion between UN member countries in the region for over ten years though a finality was not reached between the countries involved. Thirty year war in Sri Lanka delayed this process.

Every one knows that India & Sri Lanka was linked by a rail road + ferry untill the war broke out. During that period people used to travel to India by their own vehicles as the ferry was able to carry cars. In fact, former Indian ambassador to Sri Lanka Nirupama Rao used her car to come to Sri Lanka during those days when she was a junior foregin officer working in the Indian ambassy.

There is no need to warry about sovernity as this type of arrangements are there all over the world.

I think this is one prudent decision that RW taken. This was discussed in 2002. The reason behind this was "Sethu Samudram" which could have made our 2 ports including Hambanthota redundant easily.

with my experience RW always take Un-consulted decisions with short sight and often have to be reversed by a strong leader next to come..

I do not praise or criticize people, instead I do the same on ideas and stratergies. Above article might give insight of where we are and what should be our realistic targets.

Not a bad idea, only if the investment needed is not so prohibitive and worthy at the end.
UK & France have such already.
If it is a issue of border control, they can have necessary measure erected at the entrance to each country.
Once I travelled from Thailand to Singapore via Malaysia by train and train stops at the border post for few hours to get the issues sorted out.
I encountered no issue and had a wonderful unexpected break at Hatyai station for a couple of hours.
