How about turning those lose making tea lands to grow Cassava?

Beyond Barley: Cassava Beer Creating a Buzz in the Market

In Mozambique's bars and street stalls, the tipple of choice nowadays is a cold "Impala" - a beer made from cassava rather than barley that is fast capturing a valuable slice of the African market. Cassava, also known as manioc or yuca, is a root vegetable grown across sub-Saharan Africa as a staple crop, and has long been used to make home-brewed beer. But in 2011 Impala became the world's first commercially made cassava beer when it was launched by SABMiller through local subsidiary Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM).

"As long as it is ice cold, it is better," Dercio Machava told AFP at a backstreet stall on the outskirts of the capital Maputo, adding that its alcohol content of 6.5 percent was "a bit higher than other beers".

"My customers say it is good. Some days, it is the beer I sell the most," said stall-owner Dona Cecilia.
Described by its maker as a pale lager with a "rich body and taste", the beer started as an experiment to find a locally brewed product that avoided the need to import expensive barley malt.

Impala has now sold 100 million bottles since its launch - one small attraction for Anheuser-Busch InBev, which is set to buy SABMiller in one of the biggest takeovers in corporate history. "It is already the third most drank beer in Mozambique," said Pedro Cruz, director of CDM, at its state-of-the-art brewery in Maputo, which boasts a chic tasting bar. "It has been a revolution for farmers as it gave commercial value to a plant used only for food before. Impala enables more people to access a beer that is quality controlled, and to abandon the home-made beers that can be harmful to health," said Cruz.

The health argument is a serious issue across Africa where badly made homebrews cause regular fatalities. In January, 75 people were killed by toxic beer served at a funeral in Chitima, a town in western Mozambique.

I think Coffee went through same sort of crisis sometime back but some found to add more value to it, so it survived.
It is wise to take the same route with tea as well and not solely depending on the bulk market segment to be profitable.

Well Kith as per 2013 export tree 14% of our export income from Bulk Tea...

Short run this will be a massive hit.. Long run plantations have to move to different directions like even other products as you mentioned earlier...

These two charts show the relationship between Palm Oil and Petroleum.. As the prediction is Petroleum price to remain low, Palm Oil focused Plantation companies like Namunukula will have a tough time ahead. Even natural rubber price is moving in the same direction of Petroleum prices...

Time to find alternatives. Tea and Rubber are in big trouble.
    (How about වල්ලපට්ටා ?)

There's now Agardwood plantations in Sri Lanka, it is kind of a වල්ලපට්ටා. I hope this is not another Touchwood Smile

One difference is that they're giving a deed for this land for 8 years for agarwood. But still suspicious though. It's a very high risk for high return

Agree on you. I've actually taken a bit of a risk on this agardwood thing with lowest possible amount that's a 10 perch for 2,70,000 LKR (25 trees) minimum guaranteed payment of 25,000 LKR per tree after 8 years. Knowing touchwood I took this risk expecting I could loose all 2,70,000 LKR. bit of a gamble. Isn't it? (btw, got a deed few months later) But NOT going to take any more risks :-)

I think the best way to test the real value of this plot is to try to sell the plot to another (provided the deed is in your name).  Very Happy
(How these people swindle others is by stating exorbitant maintenance cost and adding cost of replacing dead plants etc ).  Shocked

I've actually even been to the place before making any payment (closer to Rathnapura). the land is unusable to anything other than plantation since it's in hills and used to grow rubber and it's real value could be very very cheap for them. There's acres of land for this all of them were used to grow rubber (trees were taken out and planted small agardwood in certain side).

Plantation Sector Updates Empty Re: Plantation Sector Updates

Plantaion sector is facing massive challenges and we cannot hold government responsible as the decline of the relevant commodities prices  like tea, rubber and palm is beyond the control of the Sri Lankan government.

Yet the sheer madness of Yahapalana ministers like calling to handover the estates from current owners to foreign investors, cutting subsidies and taking petrol cans into parliament to run a live show to increase workers wages add fuel to the fire...

RPC chairman's speech is worthy noting here..

And the source is not Lanka C news as some are allergic to sources... The source I quote now belongs to Wijeya Publishers...Anyway once again I like to note that it is not who owns the media house but the authenticity of the news that matters...

    ===================================

Retorting to these claims Planters Association Chairman Roshan Rajadurai pointed out the Government is already managing 36 estates in which the statutory liability collectively adds up to Rs. 3.6 billion per annum in 2014 without accounting for gratuity liability. Most of these factories have even been deprived of electricity due to late payments, according to the Chairman -

Rajadurai further went on to say: “The minister may have told to just handover the estates but he should understand that these are all public listed companies. The shareholders will eventually make a call and there will be a due process to hand it over to the Government. These are now private legal entities and they have borrowed from local banks, and other agencies. Adding to that gratuity liabilities in a good size company will be over Rs. 2 billion. So the Government must be prepared to take over all this liabilities.”

Government sector plantations managed by the Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation (SLSPC) and JEDB (Janatha Estate Development Board) were leased out to 23 Regional Plantations Companies (RPC)during the period 1992-1994. At the same time government entered into management agreements with some private sector companies to manage a few regional plantation companies. Kurunegala Plantations Limited and Chilaw Plantations Limited are among a few of them -

Moreover Rajadurai stated that at the time the estates were privatised the State sector was incurring a loss of Rs.1.3 billion and a debt of Rs. 7 billion which they converted to equity, whereas the Treasury was burdened Rs. 5 billion annually for operational expenses. -

He elaborated that such comments made by the Minister will send out wrong signals to the shareholders at large with regard to future investments.

“Since it was leased to us we have invested Rs. 55 billion annually to develop our estates if one wants they can compare our plantations to the Government owned companies in the tea industry. Our shareholders and the Board of Directors will decide what to do and the Government has to make a call. This is of course a very bad signal because the companies will think twice before exposing themselves to more borrowing in order to invest.”

For the past 20 months combined debt of the tea and rubber plantation companies has amounted to around Rs. 4 billion primarily due to the price drop in the market. This year the signs are that it will top Rs. 6 billion, Daily FT learns.

Rajadurai also rejected claims made by the Minister that the companies were hiding profits pointing out as public listed companies they were bound to maintain strict corporate governance regulations and insisting they were open for scrutiny
